Biohack your way to a better 2018

by -

Welcome to 2018 and here’s to a happy and healthy new year!

As a Nutritionist I am constantly reading and scouring the internet and articles for latest developments, research and evidence based examples of techniques that can improve your life. As you are probably aware, there are so many books, articles, guru’s and experts that it can be overwhelming.  I recently stumbled across the concept of ‘Biohacking’ and it really resonated with my approach to Nutritional Therapy and how I use a similar style with my clients.

According to Dr Axe of :-

Biohacking is the process of making changes to your lifestyle in order to “hack” your body’s biology and feel your best. You know the saying, “You are what you eat”? That actually applies to humans in a broader sense: everything we put into our bodies — our foods, our thoughts, our physical movement  — all affect how we behave. By biohacking yourself, you can actually transform your body so that you feel more energized, be more productive and, overall, feel like the best possible version of yourself.

So what we are really saying here is that it’s all a bit trial and error because what we do know is that what works for one person wont necessarily work for another. As a Nutritionist who works with individuals, I see this all the time – removing gluten from someone’s diet can work miracles for some but not for others, adding intensive exercise in for one person on a weight loss journey may work for them but not for another – so hacking at the body is all about making small changes to your diet and lifestyle in order to feel the benefits.

Here’s a few hacks to consider...

Biohack #1

Elimination diet – using an elimination diet is a great way to strip you back to basics and then gradually add back in the foods or food groups that are often causing problems. Alot of the time, you don’t realise that you are reacting to foods or food groups until you have completely removed them from your diet for a set period of time. Elimination diets are useful for those who suffer from allergies or suspect they have food sensitivities, also for people with eczema and headache sufferers.

Biohack #2

Eat fats – so many people avoid fats in all forms because they believe eating fat is going to make them fat! This can be so detrimental to your overall health. Healthy fats like olive oils, nuts, seeds and oily fish are full of essential fatty acids like Omega 3 and are powerful anti-inflammatories, as well as supportive for heart health (lowering cholesterol) and brain health. If you are trying to lose weight or suffering with joint pains or arthritis, adding fats to your diet could make all the difference.

Biohack #3

Ditch the sugar – for good! Sugar is present in so many of our foods that we often don’t realise how much we are consuming. So, another hack here is to become a lable reader – things like ketchup and salad dressings that are pre-made often have high amounts of hidden sugar – the obvious sources are of course, cakes, biscuits, pastries, shakes and chocolate. Removing sugar from your daily diet can be a liberating and transformational experience. Try this bio-hack and see how your body feels after a couple of sugar-free weeks!

Biohack #4

Sleep more! As a nation we are sleep deprived and constantly tired. Sleep deprivation is driving up the alarming figures for inflammatory diseases such as Alzheimer’s, strokes and diabetes. We need to get a minimum of 7 – 8 hours sleep a night, disturbed sleep patterns can wreak havoc on your metabolism, your mental health, your energy and cause inflammation.  My number one biohack for this year is to remove the smart phone and tablet from the bedroom – blue light causes so many problems for some people interfering with sleep quality and should be avoided at least 1 – 2 hours before sleep.

Biohack #5

Relax with guided meditation. This is another great bio-hack to try out to support brain health, stress and anxiety and help improve sleep quality. There is much research and evidence to support meditation practices and the benefits that they have on overall health and wellbeing. There are some great apps that can be used for beginners to make a start or for more experienced mediators. Biohack your way to daily meditation practice.

There are many more biohacks that you can use in tweaking and generating the best possible outcomes for your body. One of the main reasons I specialise in individual nutrition programmes is because no two people are the same. Using blood testing and DNA testing we can provide personalised nutritional and lifestyle programmes to suit your individual bio. No #hacking required!!

  • "Andrea at Natural Solutions is my first port of call when my body is not functioning the way I want it to. Unfortunately I live too far away to see her for face to face consultations but by talking to her on Skype she always seems to come up with a solution. I have used her for my children and my husband as well and her support has always been fantastic. When my husband went through complications after a medical procedure she sorted him out with supplements and suggestions of how to deal with it, which made it all more manageable. Great service, Andrea! Many thanks. "Ancki Danby, Southampton
