Don’t Always Reach For The Rennies!

Don’t always reach for the Rennies!

Heartburn and indigestion are increasingly common problems. Up to 60% of the adult population have experienced some form of indigestion and up to half of those experience these symptoms weekly.

Most of us have experienced that unpleasant sensation of acid rising up the food pipe or even worse, reflux when acid and food are regurgitated. The most common solution is to take ant-acids or if you have been to see your Doctor, he or she will possibly have prescribed a PPI medication (Proton Pump Inhibitor) to prevent this unpleasant reflux.

If you find yourself burping or belching soon after eating, it is likely to be a symptom associated with GERD (Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease). Here’s a few of the other symptoms that may indicate acid -reflux disease

  • Heartburn
  • Dry mouth
  • Bad breath or halitosis
  • Bitter taste in the mouth
  • Burping and belching
  • Waking up in the night with reflux or acid indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Bleeding gums
  • Bloating and gas (flatulence)

More often than not, you will use ant-acid over the counter medications to suppress the acid and the burning, if you suffer from weekly or more regular bouts of acid reflux, then you may have been prescribed a PPI medication. However, you may have noticed that these medications don’t always work and sometimes can cause other side effects that can contribute to the feeling of ill health.

Studies show that heartburn and indigestion are very often caused by low levels of stomach acid rather than high. The reason for the acid coming back up the food pipe is because there is insufficient levels of acid in the stomach to break down the food and allow it to pass into the next stage of your digestive system. By using ant-acids, you are potentially exacerbating the situation by reducing and suppressing the activity of the acid in your stomach.
