Let's talk about stress...

It's something we all suffer with, men, women, children, even our pets - everyone has to deal with stress in some form and it's a daily occurrence.

From pet peeves to the bigger things in life, learning how to manage stress effectively can help you in a multitude of ways, both mentally and physically.

On Wednesday this week, there was even a National day devoted to stress awareness, because, let's face it, stress is STRESSFUL!

What we have going on in our brains manifests itself in both physical and mental forms of emotion, when we're happy we smile and our brains release endorphins. Yet when we're stressed, you might grit your teeth, clench your fists or hold your head in your hands. On the inside, our brain releases cortisol, a hormone which can damage cells in the area of our brain related to memory, effectively aging our brains prematurely.  

Men's mental health is still surrounded by stigma and often brushed off as something to suppress. However, stress can cause damage to or effect;

  • Heart
  • Libido 
  • Reduce life expectancy
  • Memory
  • Relationships
     

Keeping yourself healthy can have such a huge positive effect on reducing stress and keeping your wellbeing in check!

Where do you begin to start beating stress? 

I know it's cliche of the Nutritionist to talk about diet, but it's a huge part of your life! You eat every day and what you put in your body needs to be good for it to get the most out of it. Hand in hand with diet comes exercise, taking small steps to increase your daily activity will boost your mood and of course help you manage your weight.

Aside from diet and exercise, another aspect of daily life which we often neglect is sleep! Without proper sleep our bodies can't recuperate from the stress of the day, make those 40 winks a priority, with a repeated bedtime routine.

  • "I had been back and forth to my GP with various digestive complaints including bloating, acid reflux, alternating constipation and diarrhoea and abdominal pain. My GP prescribed me laxatives and tablets for the acid reflux. I decided I was far too young at 36 years old to be having these problems and went to Natural Solutions.
