What is menopause?

Typically a woman’s’ ovaries stop producing eggs in her early 50’s and her menstrual cycle ceases.  When she has not had a period for 6 months then she is said to have completed the menopause.  Though the menopause is not a disease, it does have some unpleasant symptoms.  For five to ten years before a woman has her last period she may experience menstrual irregularities, hot flushes, and irritability; after the menopause, she faces possible vaginal dryness, a decline in bone mass and an increased risk of heart disease.

What causes it?

As the ovaries gradually stop manufacturing the hormones oestrogen and progesterone, menopausal symptoms and the risk of heart disease and osteoporosis increase.  Many women opt for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), but worries about links between long-term HRT and breast cancer motivate some women to try natural remedies.  These remedies are also beneficial for women experiencing peri-menopausal symptoms while still menstruating.

How can Nutritional Therapy help?

Diet, herbs and specific supplements are a key way of managing the symptoms during menopause and maintaining health in the years that follow. In some cases eating the right foods and using appropriate herbs and supplements can eliminate the symptoms of menopause altogether.

For example, plant compounds called Phytoestrogens found in certain foods can partially compensate for declining oestrogen levels the body. Medicinal herbs and limiting the intake of salt, caffeine, alcohol and spicy foods can help prevent hot flushes.

  • "I had been back and forth to my GP with various digestive complaints including bloating, acid reflux, alternating constipation and diarrhoea and abdominal pain.
