Do You Know What Causes Thyroid Disorders?

Do you know what causes Thyroid Disorders?

I recently held a talk on Nutritional Support for Thyroid Health which you may have attended. I wanted to share some further information following the event which you may find useful.

Thyroid disorders are amongst the most common medical conditions in women and the elderly, occurring in the thyroid glad which is located in the neck.

The glad secretes two main hormones, T3 and T4. Disorders can occur when there’s an imbalance of hormones, including an excessive production of thyroid hormones, referred to as hyperthyroidism.

Other imbalances in Thyroid function can arise for a number of reasons:

• Underproduction of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism)

• Enlarged thyroid (goitre)

• Nodules or lumps in the thyroid (multinodular goitre)

• Disturbance of normal thyroid function by drugs e.g., corticosteroids,

lithium carbonate, salicylates etc

• Autoimmune thyroid – Hashimotos’ disease

How can you overcome thyroid disease and disorders?

Firstly improving your gut health – this allows you to start literally healing from within!

Did you know that 80% of your immune system is based in your digestive system? So an unhealthy gut can lead to a myriad of issues for the body. Repairing your gut and improving your bacterial and microbial balance will improve your overall immune health.

Secondly, one we all know – improving your diet. Are you getting a good balance of the food groups and are you incorporating enough fruit and veg in your diet to consume a decent amount of nutrients?

Next up is stress and adrenal support. Embrace stress reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga and exercise to help shift your body into a regenerative process.

As above, supporting Thyroid health relates closely to gut health, repairing the gut can help to reverse negative symptoms. One condition which can cause thyroid and immunity issues is Leaky Gut.

This occurs when the lining of the intestines becomes too permeable, allowing toxins, microbes, viruses and bacteria to escape into your bloodstream. This causes an attack from your immune system until the immune system attacks your thyroid or other organs.

How can you repair the gut?

Using a 5 R’s approach to healing the gut:

• Remove – stressers, food sensitivities, bacteria, parasites, viruses

• Replace – digestive enzymes, HCl, nutrients

• Repair – gut lining, reduce inflammation

• Reinoculate – probiotics, healthy microbial balance

• Re-establish – gut balance

I’ve created a free guide to Nutritional Support for Thyroid Health which you can download and view here. There’s plenty of information including how you can get tested, optimise your diet, receive further guidance and support and how you can book a thyroid support programme with me.
